Three communities
What’s different about each area
Doña Ana
One of the oldest settlements in the Mesilla Valley, just north of Las Cruces off I-25. Older adobe homes, valley soil, mature trees and irrigated fields nearby. Landscaping here often means tree care, flood-irrigated yard upkeep and clean, traditional courtyards.
Fairacres
A semi-rural community along US 70 west of Las Cruces, with acre-plus lots, horse properties and small farms. Most jobs are windbreaks, driveway gravel, weed and goathead control and cleaning up around barns and outbuildings.
Organ
A former mining town at 5,056 ft below San Augustin Pass, about 1,100 ft higher than Las Cruces. Colder winter nights, strong wind off the pass and rocky ground call for hardier plants and heavier rock. Many residents are connected to nearby White Sands Missile Range.

Myth vs. fact
“One row of trees is enough.”
Fact: a single row lets wind through underneath and around the gaps. Two or three rows, with shrubs on the windward side, block far more wind and dust.

Drip first, then plant
Windbreak plants on open ground need deep, regular water for the first two or three summers. We lay drip on a timer before the first plant goes in.
