Desert-Edge Landscaping in Talavera and Soledad Canyon, East of Las Cruces
Out behind A Mountain, homes sit on 1 to 5 acres of open Chihuahuan Desert right up against the Organ Mountains. The best yards here don’t fight that. We landscape around the house, restore ground torn up by construction, and keep the native desert, the arroyos and the view doing what they do best.

What makes these lots different
The approach
Do you need to landscape a whole acreage in Talavera?
No. On Talavera and Soledad Canyon lots we landscape a living zone 20 to 30 feet around the house, restore ground scraped during construction with native seed and boulders, and leave the rest as native desert that needs no water, only trash and weed removal.
We plan in zones so the effort, water and money go where you actually live.
|
Zone |
Area |
What goes there |
|---|---|---|
|
Living zone |
Patio and 20 to 30 ft around the house |
Shade, seating, a few flowering plants on drip, rock or DG, fire-wise spacing |
|
Restoration zone |
Ground disturbed by construction, septic and driveways |
Native grass and wildflower seed, boulders, erosion control |
|
Native desert |
The rest of the lot |
Existing creosote, mesquite, yucca and grasses, left alone; trash and invasive weeds removed |
Myth vs. fact
“Scraped ground will grow back on its own.”
Fact: bare, compacted construction ground can stay bare for years, blowing dust and growing weeds. Loosening the surface and seeding native grasses and wildflowers before the monsoon speeds recovery.
Tip
Save the plants before you build
Yuccas, agaves and small cacti in the building footprint can often be dug and replanted around the new house, saving money and keeping the look native.
Fire safety
How do you make a desert-edge yard fire-safe?
Follow Firewise USA zones: keep the first five feet around the house noncombustible with rock, gravel or pavers, keep plants spaced and trees trimmed out to 30 feet, and thin dense brush and clear dead plants out to 100 feet.
Dry grass and brush can carry fire across open desert in windy, dry spells. The national Firewise USA program recommends managing vegetation in zones around the home.

How it works
How does a desert-edge landscaping project work?
We walk the land to check arroyos, driveways, septic, construction scars, views and native plants worth saving, write a zone plan with an itemized price, salvage plants, build near the house, seed disturbed ground, then check how the first monsoon storms move water.
1
Walk the land
We look at arroyos, driveways, septic, construction scars, views and what native plants are worth saving.
2
Zone plan
A living zone, restoration areas and native desert, with an itemized price.
3
Protect and salvage
Mark native plants to keep, and dig and hold ones that need to move.
4
Build and restore
Patio and plantings near the house; seed and erosion control on disturbed ground.
5
Monsoon check
We check how the first storms move water and touch up anything that needs it.
Local know-how
What makes Talavera and Soledad lots different?
Lots east of Las Cruces have arroyos that run hard in monsoon storms, rabbits and snakes coming in from the open desert, dark skies and Organ Mountain views worth protecting, and well or small-system water, so drip stays in the living zone only.
Arroyos move a lot of water
Dry washes can run hard in monsoon storms. We armor crossings and edges with larger rock and keep them open, not filled.
Wildlife will visit
Rabbits eat young plants and snakes like shady rock piles. We use cages for new plantings and keep rock and wood piles away from doors and play areas.
Dark skies and views
Low, shielded path lighting keeps the night sky and mountain views clear for you and your neighbors.
Water carefully
Most lots rely on a well or a small water system. Drip in the living zone only, and native plants beyond it, keep demand low.

A patio and planters close to the house, with open desert beyond.
