Turf or sod? A quick guide

  • Choose turf for dogs, kids’ play areas and shady or hard-to-water spots
  • Choose turf if you never want to mow or water again
  • Choose sod if you want the coolest surface underfoot in summer
  • Choose sod for a lower upfront cost on large areas
  • Choose xeriscape for the rest of the yard to save water

Most Las Cruces backyards work best with a small turf or grass area and desert landscaping around it.

How hot does artificial turf get?

Heat is the honest downside of turf in the desert. Studies summarized by the Toxics Use Reduction Institute found synthetic surfaces running far hotter than grass in direct sun, and water only cools them for a short time.

35–42°F

Hotter than natural grass on average (New York State, 2009)

156°F

Installed right

How should artificial turf be installed in the desert?

Remove old grass and roots, grade the soil to drain away from the house, compact 3 to 4 inches of crushed rock in layers, add weed barrier, seam the turf along the grain, brush in infill and nail the edges so spring winds can’t lift them.

Turf only looks as good as what’s under it. Ripples, puddles and pet odor almost always trace back to a rushed base.

Remove and grade

Old grass, roots and rock come out. We grade the soil so water drains away from the house and toward a safe outlet.

Compacted rock base

3 to 4 inches of crushed rock, compacted in layers, gives a flat, firm surface that drains fast in monsoon storms.

Weed barrier

A barrier under the base stops weeds and Bermuda runners from pushing up through the turf.

Hidden seams

Seams are cut along the grain and glued on seam tape, so you see one continuous lawn, not strips.

The right infill

Silica sand for weight and upright blades, or odor-control infill in pet areas. Cooling infill options are available.

Locked-down edges

Edges are nailed and set against edging so spring winds can’t lift or curl the turf.

Real grass

What should I know before laying sod in Las Cruces?

Bermuda sod needs warm weather to root, so it goes down from about May through August. Prepare and amend the soil first, make sure a working sprinkler system is in place, water lightly and often for two weeks, and keep foot traffic off until roots knit.

Sod laid in the dormant season sits brown and can struggle to root. Timing details: best time to lay sod in Las Cruces.

  • Best time to lay Bermuda sod: about May through August
  • Water new sod lightly and often for the first two weeks, then deeper and less often
  • Stay off new sod for about two weeks while roots knit
  • First mow once it’s rooted and about a third taller than its target height
  • New lawns may qualify for establishment watering; check with Las Cruces Utilities

Myth vs. fact

“Artificial turf is maintenance-free.”

Fact: it needs brushing to keep blades upright, rinsing in pet areas and an occasional infill top-up. It’s much less work than a lawn, but not zero.

Myth vs. fact

“Turf is always better for water bills.”

Fact: turf uses no irrigation water, but a small Bermuda area on efficient sprinklers can be reasonable. Often the best savings come from shrinking the grass area and xeriscaping the rest.

Artificial turf and sod FAQs

Removal of the old surface, grading, a compacted rock base, weed barrier, seamed turf, infill and secured edging. In Las Cruces that typically costs $8 to $16 per square foot, so a 400 sq ft backyard usually runs $3,200 to $6,400.

Bermuda sod usually costs about $1 to $2 per square foot installed, plus soil prep. Most sod lawns also need a sprinkler system, which typically runs $2,000 to $4,500 if you don’t have one.

It can. Studies found synthetic turf averaging 35 to 42°F hotter than grass in direct sun. Lighter or cooling infill, afternoon shade and smart placement help, and rinsing cools it briefly.

Yes, when it’s built for pets. We use a fast-draining base and odor-control infill, and we recommend rinsing pet areas regularly, especially in summer.

Quality turf installed on a proper base typically lasts many years. Strong UV, heavy pet use and skipped brushing shorten its life, so placement and care matter.

Late spring through summer, roughly May to August, when Bermuda is actively growing and roots quickly. Avoid laying warm-season sod while it is dormant in winter.

New sod needs light, frequent watering for about two weeks, then deeper and less often. Ask Las Cruces Utilities about establishment watering for new landscaping before you install.

Yes, if it is installed right. Water passes through the perforated backing into the compacted rock base, and we grade the base so it drains away from the house.

Most Las Cruces yards do best with a small turf or grass area for kids and pets and desert landscaping for the rest. We’ll price the options side by side on your estimate.
