Landscaping in Mesilla, NM: Yards for Historic Lots, Mature Trees and Flood Irrigation
Mesilla yards aren’t like the new builds on the East Mesa. There are 80-year-old pecans and cottonwoods, flood-irrigated lawns fed by the ditch, adobe walls, and a historic district with its own rules. We landscape Mesilla and Mesilla Park properties with all of that in mind.
Updated October 2026. Serving Old Mesilla, Mesilla Park and the valley south of Las Cruces. Free on-site estimate, written price before we start.

Quick answer
What landscaping do Mesilla homeowners need most?
Most Mesilla landscaping work covers four needs: care for large old pecans and cottonwoods, keeping flood-irrigated lawns and orchards level and weed-free, courtyards and walls that suit adobe homes, and converting thirsty parts of the yard to low-water landscaping without losing the shade.
Prices are below, and every quote is written and itemized. Compare with our Las Cruces landscaping cost guide.

Services in Mesilla
What landscaping services are available in Mesilla, NM?
In Mesilla and Mesilla Park we provide mature tree care, flood-irrigated yard care, flagstone and brick courtyards, partial xeriscape conversions, drainage for flat lots, and fast cleanups for rentals and guest houses near the plaza, all adapted to older valley lots.
Mature tree care
Deadwood removal, canopy thinning and clearance for pecans, cottonwoods, elms and mulberries, with every branch hauled away.
Flood-irrigated yard care
Border and berm repair, re-leveling low spots, clearing ditch turnouts and keeping irrigated lawns and orchards mowed and weed-free.
Courtyards and walkways
Flagstone, brick and gravel courtyards and paths that fit adobe and territorial-style homes.
Partial xeriscape conversions
Keep the shade trees and some green, and convert front strips, side yards and hard-to-water areas to rock, native plants and drip.
Drainage for flat lots
Grading and dry creek beds so monsoon rain and irrigation water move away from adobe walls and foundations.
Rental and short-stay turnovers
Fast cleanups, trimming and curb appeal for rentals and guest houses near the plaza.
Flood irrigation
How do you landscape a flood-irrigated yard in Mesilla?
Level the ground so water spreads evenly, keep borders and berms tight, clean ditch edges and turnouts, add drip to beds the flood water can’t reach, and keep water off adobe walls. EBID small-tract irrigations come about every three weeks from mid-March to mid-October.
Many Mesilla and Mesilla Park properties still get water from the Elephant Butte Irrigation District (EBID) ditch system. It’s a real asset for big trees and lawns, as long as the yard is built to take it.

What we do for flood-irrigated yards
Myth vs. fact
“Flood irrigation means I can grow anything.”
Fact: with irrigations about three weeks apart in summer, plants between turns face long dry spells. Deep-rooted trees handle it well; shallow beds and new plantings usually need drip too.
Historic district
What landscaping rules apply in Mesilla’s historic district?
In the Town of Mesilla’s Historical Residential (H-R) zone, exterior changes such as walls and fences need Town review. Adobe, brick, stucco, slump block, stone, wood and wrought iron are permitted; unstuccoed block, chain link, barbed wire and front-setback metal fencing are not.
Properties in the Town of Mesilla’s Historical Residential (H-R) zone need approval for changes that affect exterior appearance, including walls and fences. We plan hardscape with the approved materials from the start.

We walk the lot to check trees, ditch access, grades, walls and anything the Town may need to approve, write an itemized plan, time tree work for the dormant season and ground work between irrigation turns, then protect adobe, roots and ditch banks while we work.

Local know-how
What makes Mesilla yards different?
Mesilla sits on silty valley soil that drains slower than mesa sand, under big shade trees with wide, shallow roots, in open fields that get strong spring wind, beside adobe walls that must stay dry. Good landscaping here protects roots and keeps water off walls.
Valley soil holds water
The silty valley soil drains slower than the sandy mesa, so we watch for soggy spots and root rot.
Old trees, big roots
Pecan and cottonwood roots run wide and shallow. We avoid trenching and heavy equipment inside the drip line.
Spring wind and dust
Open valley fields mean strong spring winds. Windbreak shrubs and mulch keep soil and dust in place.
Adobe needs to stay dry
We keep soil, rock and water away from adobe and stucco bases, and slope grades away from walls.

Shaded beds and clean borders suit Mesilla’s older, tree-lined lots.
