Las Cruces has an outdoor lighting ordinance meant to cut glare and light pollution, and southern New Mexico’s dark skies are something a lot of residents care about. Here’s what it means for your yard, based on the ordinance as published:

Heat and UV
Plastic fixtures crack and fade in our sun. We use cast brass, copper or quality aluminum that holds up.
Rock and caliche
We bury cable in the beds and under rock, and plan runs to avoid digging through caliche where we can.
Desert plants
Agaves, yuccas, ocotillo and palo verde cast great shadows. A single well-placed, shielded light often beats five floods.
Dust
Blowing dust dims lenses. A quick wipe each spring keeps the system bright.
Timers
Photocells or astronomic timers turn lights on at dusk and off at a set hour, which saves power and neighbors’ views.
