Safety and rules
Fire pit safety in Las Cruces
Most fire codes require wood-burning recreational fires to be kept well away from buildings and anything that burns, commonly about 25 feet, with smaller setbacks for gas and approved portable units. We plan the location before we pour anything.
When drought is severe, the Las Cruces Fire Department has limited open burning. In May 2022, for example, it stopped vegetation burn permits but said the restrictions did not include recreational fires such as grills, fire pits or fireplaces. Always check current rules before lighting a wood fire.
