How far should a fire pit be from the house?
Many fire codes require wood-burning recreational fires to be about 25 feet from buildings and anything that burns, with smaller setbacks for gas and approved portable units. Check local rules and burn restrictions during dry, windy spells before you build or light a fire.
When drought is severe, the Las Cruces Fire Department has limited open burning. In May 2022, for example, it stopped vegetation burn permits but said the restrictions did not include recreational fires such as grills, fire pits or fireplaces. Always check current rules before lighting a wood fire.
