Quick answer
How much does a patio cost in Las Cruces?
A patio in Las Cruces costs about $4 to $30 per square foot installed, depending on material. A typical 12 by 16 foot paver patio costs $2,300 to $3,900. Concrete is cheapest, from $4 per square foot, and flagstone is highest, up to $30.
Those prices include digging out, a compacted base and edging. Caliche, slopes, drainage work and tight access can add to the total, which is why every patio cost should be itemized in writing.

Price drivers
What makes a patio cost more?
The biggest cost drivers in Las Cruces are the ground and the shape: caliche or soft fill that needs extra digging and base, grading and drainage, curves and pattern cuts, removing an old slab, and access for equipment. The material itself is only part of the price.
Does caliche raise patio cost?
Often. Hardpan has to be broken up or drained around so water doesn’t pool under the patio, which adds labor and base material.
Do I need grading and drainage?
Most bare new-build yards do. Grading and drainage typically add $500 to $1,500 so the patio sheds monsoon water away from the house.
Do curves and patterns cost more?
Yes. Curves, borders and herringbone patterns mean more cuts and more waste than a simple square patio.
What if there’s an old slab?
Breaking out and hauling away old concrete adds cost. If the slab is sound and level, thin pavers can sometimes go right over it.
Does shade add cost?
A pergola runs about $2,100 to $6,000 or more, but on a west-facing patio shade is what makes the space usable in summer.
Do I need a permit?
A ground-level patio usually doesn’t, but attached covers, walls and major grading may. Ask the City before you build.

Save money
How can I save money on a patio?
Keep the shape simple, choose a standard paver or broom-finish concrete, reuse a sound slab where possible, and use crushed granite for paths and side areas. Never save by thinning the base; that’s the most expensive shortcut.
1
Go square
Rectangles with straight edges need fewer cuts than curves and patterns.
2
Mix materials
Pavers where you sit, crushed granite for paths and side yards.
3
Build in phases
Patio and drainage first; fire pit, seat wall and pergola later.
4
Pick standard sizes
Common paver shapes and colors cost less than specialty stone.
Worth it?
Is a patio worth the cost in Las Cruces?
For most homes, yes. A patio adds usable outdoor living space for most of the year in our climate, cuts down on dust and mud by the back door, and needs far less water and care than lawn. Shade is what makes it usable in summer.
