Las Cruces Yard Guide
Best Time to Lay Sod in Las Cruces
New sod can look perfect on day one and be brown and shrinking by day ten. In Las Cruces, timing and the first two weeks of watering decide whether it roots. Here’s when to lay Bermuda sod, how to prep the soil, and how to water it without fighting the City schedule.
Updated September 2026 using NMSU Extension guidance.

Quick answer
When is the best time to lay sod in Las Cruces?
The best time to lay Bermuda sod in Las Cruces is late April through August, when the grass is actively growing and warm soil lets roots knit in within a few weeks. May, June and early September are the sweet spots, avoiding the hottest July afternoons.
NMSU Extension notes that sod can be laid almost year-round in southern New Mexico, but avoid winter. Dormant sod laid from about November to February won’t root until spring and can dry out or suffer winter-kill.

Prep
How do you prepare soil before laying sod in Las Cruces?
Remove old grass, weeds and rocks, break up compacted builder fill or caliche, mix in a few inches of compost where the soil is sandy or hard, grade the area so water drains away from the house, then roll it smooth and moisten it the day before the sod arrives.
1. Clear and grade
Remove weeds, old grass and rock. Grade the area so water drains away from the house, with no low spots.
2. Loosen 4 to 6 inches
NMSU recommends at least 4 inches of prepared soil, and 6 inches or more for best rooting. Break through hardpan or caliche where you can.
3. Amend
Mix in compost, about 50 to 100 pounds per 100 square feet according to NMSU, to help sandy soil hold water.
4. Check the sprinklers
Run every zone before the sod arrives. Fix gaps now; new sod dies first where coverage is weak.
5. Lay tight, roll it
Stagger seams like bricks, butt edges tight, and roll the whole area so the sod touches the soil.
6. Water immediately
Water within 30 minutes of laying each section, especially in summer. Don’t wait until the whole yard is done.

Watering
How often should you water new sod in Las Cruces?
Water new sod lightly two or three times a day for the first week or two so it never dries out, then switch to deeper, less frequent watering as roots grow. When a lifted corner resists, roots have formed and you can move to your City watering days.

The City schedule and new sod
Las Cruces limits outdoor watering to three days a week by address, and to mornings and evenings in summer. New sod usually needs more than that for its first few weeks. The City’s water conservation office handles variance requests, so ask before you lay sod.
Summer tips
Lay sod early in the morning, keep pallets in shade, and never leave rolls sitting on a hot driveway. Water each section as soon as it’s down.
Once established, follow our Bermuda lawn care guide and the Las Cruces watering schedule.
After install
When can you mow, fertilize and walk on new sod?
Mow new sod once the grass is tall enough to cut and the sod no longer lifts, usually 10 to 14 days in summer. Feed it about 4 to 6 weeks after laying, keep kids and dogs off for two weeks, and skip pre-emergent until it is fully rooted.
Why new sod fails
Cost
How much does sod cost in Las Cruces?
Bermuda sod usually runs about $1 to $2 per square foot installed, plus about $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot for soil prep. If the area has no sprinklers, a new system typically costs $2,000 to $4,500. Compare options in our turf vs. sod guide.
