Las Cruces Yard Guide

Rock vs. Wood Mulch in Las Cruces

Most Las Cruces yards are covered in rock, and for good reason: it lasts, stays put in the wind and looks at home in the desert. But rock holds heat, and research from the Phoenix area found wood mulch keeps soil far cooler and wetter. The best yards here often use both. Here’s where each one belongs.

Quick answer

Is rock or mulch better in Las Cruces?

Use rock for open areas, slopes, walkways and wind-exposed beds, where it lasts for years and won’t blow away. Use wood mulch in rings around trees, shrubs and vegetable beds, where it keeps soil much cooler and holds moisture.

Both work over bare soil or permeable weed barrier; neither should go over plastic sheeting.

The research

Does rock make plants hotter than mulch?

Yes, below the surface. In a Phoenix-area study, soil under organic mulch stayed about 23 to 40°F cooler at two inches deep than soil under decomposed granite, and organic mulch cut evaporation from about 70 mm to about 31 mm over 22 June days.

Why does rock heat soil?

Rock conducts heat down into the soil and releases it at night.

Why does mulch save water?

Wood mulch insulates the soil and slows evaporation.

What does it mean for plants?

Trees and thirstier shrubs benefit most from mulch over their roots.

Where each goes

Where should I use rock and where should I use mulch?

Put rock on open areas, slopes, side yards, paths, drainage swales and near the house, where it lasts and keeps things tidy. Put wood mulch in rings under trees, around shrubs, in vegetable and flower beds, and in sheltered spots out of the strongest wind.

2

Slopes and swales

Larger rock that won’t wash away.

3

Near the house

5

6

Windy corners

Rock, or mulch sheltered by plants and edging.

Cost

How much do rock and mulch cost in Las Cruces?

Installed landscape rock runs about $3 to $6 per square foot, including weed barrier, and lasts for years. Wood mulch costs less per load and can be free at the Foothills Landfill when available, but it breaks down and needs topping up about once a year.

Mistakes

What are common rock and mulch mistakes?

The most common mistakes are plastic sheeting under rock, rock or mulch piled against trunks and stucco, mulch too thin to stop weeds, light mulch in windy open yards, and dark rock around plants in full sun, which adds reflected heat. Aim for two to three inches of either.

Plastic under rock

It blocks air and water. Use permeable weed barrier instead.

Volcano mulching

Keep mulch a few inches off trunks to prevent rot.

Too thin or too deep

Two to three inches is enough for most beds.

Best of both

Can I use rock and mulch together?

Yes, and it’s often the best approach in Las Cruces. Cover the yard with rock for durability and a clean desert look, then pull the rock back from each tree and large shrub and fill a ring out to the drip line with wood mulch. Edging keeps the two separate.

  • Rock for the main areas
  • Mulch rings under trees and shrubs
  • Steel edging between them
  • Drip emitters under the mulch

Rock and mulch FAQs

Rock lasts longer and stays put in wind; wood mulch keeps soil cooler and wetter. Most Las Cruces yards use rock overall and mulch around plants.

Rock stores and releases heat, especially dark rock in full sun. Soil under rock runs much hotter than soil under wood mulch.

About two to three inches, kept a few inches away from trunks and stems.

It’s better to pull rock back and put mulch directly on the soil around plants.

The City gives away composted mulch at the Foothills Landfill when it’s available. Check first.

Mulch can shelter insects. Keep it away from the foundation and use rock next to the house.

Top it up about once a year as it breaks down.

No. Plastic blocks water and air. Use permeable weed barrier.
