Native plants

Where can you buy native plants in Las Cruces?

Native Chihuahuan Desert plants are sold by Robledo Vista Nursery at the Saturday Farmers & Crafts Market, by Sierra Vista Growers south of town, and in smaller numbers at the bigger local nurseries. The Las Cruces chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico can point you to sources.

Natives worth asking for:

  • Desert willow, a small flowering tree
  • Claret cup cactus and prickly pear
  • Apache plume and creosote bush
  • Chocolate flower and damianita
  • Mesquite for shade on bigger lots

Growing tips: desert willow care and hummingbird and pollinator gardens.

Buying checklist

How do you pick healthy plants at a Las Cruces nursery?

Pick plants with firm, evenly colored leaves, roots that fill the pot without circling, no pests under leaves, and a tag showing the full-sun and cold rating. For Las Cruces, choose plants rated for Zone 8b, full sun and alkaline soil.

1

Check the tag

Zone 8b or colder, full sun, and low or moderate water.

2

Look at the roots

Slide the pot off if allowed. White roots that fill the pot are good; thick circling roots are not.

3

Check the leaves

No yellowing between green veins, spots, webbing or insects under the leaves.

4

Pick the right size

A 5-gallon shrub often catches up to a 15-gallon one in two years and costs far less.

5

Plan the drip

Know where each plant goes and how it gets water before you buy.

Timing

When is the best time to buy plants in Las Cruces?

Fall, from late September through November, is the best time to buy and plant most trees, shrubs and perennials in Las Cruces, because roots grow in warm soil while cool air limits stress. Spring after the last frost, around mid-April, is second best.

Fall: best for most plants

Trees, shrubs, perennials and natives. Roots settle in before summer heat. See the fall planting guide.

Spring: second best

After the last frost, around mid-April. Good for frost-tender plants, cacti, succulents and summer color.

Summer: plant with care

June heat stresses new plants. If you must plant, water deeply and give afternoon shade for the first weeks.

Buy or hire

Should you buy plants yourself or have a landscaper supply them?

Buy plants yourself for a few shrubs or a small bed. Have a landscaper supply and plant them when the job includes many plants, trees over 15 gallons, drip lines or caliche digging, because installers handle hauling, planting holes and irrigation, and some warranty what they plant.

  • Caliche often needs a digging bar or auger
  • Large trees need a truck and two people
  • Every new plant needs a drip emitter
  • Ask how long plants are guaranteed
